Total Knee Replacement
Total joint replacement is
a surgical procedure that replaces specific parts of a diseased
joint with a plastic and or metal component called a prosthesis.
The prosthesis performs the functions of your previously diseased
joint.
How it Works?
In total knee replacement, a metal
prosthesis is placed at the end of the thighbone (femur) and shinbone
(tibia). In between, a highly durable plastic insert is in placed to
replace the damaged articular cartilage.
Performed regularly since the 1960's, total joint replacement
surgery is one of the most important surgical advances of this century.
Since then, improvements in joint replacement surgical techniques and
implant technology have greatly increased the effectiveness of this
surgery. Today, more than 300,000 total joint replacements are
performed each year in the United States.
