Treatment

Your physician may recommend an ice massage to help relieve pain. You may also do low-impact exercises that strengthen your thigh muscle (quadriceps). If these treatments fail to alleviate the symptoms, you'll need arthroscopic surgery. During the operation, the surgeon may remove the damaged pieces of cartilage from the patella or cut ligaments so the kneecap can move more easily.
