MODULAR-PLUS

A message from the designer, Dr. Karl Zweymüller:

The proven SL-PLUS and SLR-PLUS stems are now supplemented by a new stem system for surgical revision: MODULAR-PLUS. This further increases the treatment options for major revision procedures and almost fulfils our aim of providing a complete, cementless system.

The basic principle of the hip system, i.e. stable, tapering, rectangular anchorage is retained. While adequate primary stability is the precondition for rapid osseointegration, the design of the MODULAR-PLUS system has had to be adapted to the difficult conditions pertaining to surgical revision. The aim is still functional restoration of optimal stem-cup geometry.

In the event of bone damage in the proximal femur the MODULAR-PLUS can be anchored in the distal half. This extends the range of indications to particularly difficult revisions. Thanks to its modular design and forward curve, the stem can be implanted without having to open up the bone. With a straight stem system the bone frequently has to be opened up because of the long curve of the femoral shaft.

We developed our own flexible drill system since a rigid rasp is unable to function properly beyond a certain point in the curved medullary canal. These new instruments can be used to produce an accurate tapered, anatomically-contoured bone shaft.

Revision operations should be performed only by experienced surgeons capable of dealing with damaged and weakened bone. We therefore consider the MODULAR-PLUS stem system to be an appropriate alternative for use in particularly difficult hip revisions.
